May's Beer Senate commenced in Triple Crown fashion with the Ommegang "Nirvana" IPA (6.5% ABV, 60 IBU) out of Cooperstown, New York, which was a smooth, citrusy American IPA served with an Irish-Italian hot dog: white Irish sausage with sautéed peppers and onions, topped with house-cut Montreal-seasoned steak fries on a hoagie roll. For our wing course, Moshe developed a which paired nicely with the sweetness of Alltech Brewing's Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale (8.2% ABV), an award-winning English strong ale with a nose of well-crafted bourbon out of Lexington, Kentucky. Next up, we tasted Duclaw's "Hop Continuum #3" IPA (8.9% ABV, 75 IBU), a hop-heavy Imperial IPA out of Maryland with our main dish: slow-cooked pork posole served over stewed white hominy corn with a guajillo pepper sauce. For dessert we had none other than Southern Tier's Choklat Oranj Stout (10.3% ABV) an imperial stout brewed with chocolate and orange peel hailing from Lakewood, New York that was a welcome finish to the spiciness of the previous dishes. At times, it can be a very close race between all the contending beers but for this Senate, the "Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale" ran away with the win, gathering a 50% majority vote! Look for it on tap this month and make you attend our next and final Beer Senate on Tuesday, June 14 at 7pm before we take our summer recess and reconvene in September! Fittingly, the theme is "Final Countdown" and all beers we try will feature numbers in their names! See you then!
